Finnish Pride

Elle Decor Italia No4, April 2012, pages 224-231

100% made in Finland. A gem, a temple of beauty where Juhani Lemmetti is surrounded each day by the unique legacy of great artists and famous designers.

Stepping into the home of Juhani Lemmetti – senior advisor for Artek and director of  Artek 2nd Cycle, an underground warehouse transformed into a paradise of vintage Finnish design – is like leafing through the pages of an encyclopaedia of Finnish design. In his Helsinki apartment, a classic nineteenth century dwelling, Lemmetti – one of the world's leading and most selective design collectors – displays a part of his personal collection, which began in the '80s. ”I believe”, states the collector, ”that design should play a basic role in everyday life, transforming each daily act into something simple, quick and comfortable, in one word, practical”. At home, Juhani Lemmetti is surrounded by legends such as Eero Saarinen, Paavo Tynell, Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Franck, Timo Sarpaneva, Alvar Aalto and Ilmari Tapiovaara. But the design pieces that make up his personal domestic treasure trove coexist in perfect symbiosis with a world of contemporary art works that decorate the rooms with the unique sensibilities of Vasarely, Calder, Lavonen, Tapper, Weckström and Kaipiainen.
